Practice using the correct verb form (-ING or TO + Verb) in the context of media and downtime while serving.

1. Complete the Sentence

Complete the following sentences using the correct gerund or infinitive form of the verb in brackets. Type only the gerund or infinitive.

EXAMPLE: The engineer decided (fix) the radio immediately.

Grammar Focus: The verb 'decide' is followed by the Infinitive (to + verb).

1. Many sailors look forward to (contact) their families every weekend.

2. On long deployments, crew members finish (watch) all the movies quickly.

3. It's difficult (be) away from home for several months.

4. The officer suggested (play) board games in the recreation room.

5. Some of the crew hope (learn) a new language during their time at sea.

2. Verb Pattern Transformations

Rewrite the sentence using the opposite structure (Gerund ↔ Infinitive). The meaning should stay the same.

EXAMPLE: The watchman enjoys reading during his shift.

Transformation: Gerund (-ING) to Infinitive (TO + Verb).

1. They avoid being outside during the midday sun.

2. It is easy to access digital entertainment now.

3. The captain likes checking the weather reports daily.

Hint: 'Like' can take both, so use 'to check'.

4. We need to maintain our equipment carefully.

5. The best way to relax is by listening to music.

3. Fill-in-the-Gap

Read the text and fill in the gaps with the correct Gerund or Infinitive form of the verb provided in brackets `[ ]`.

EXAMPLE: The team finished [pack] the equipment.

Grammar Focus: The verb 'finish' is followed by the Gerund.

Life on a ship requires discipline. Most sailors try fit by exercising daily. When they have time, they enjoy a movie together. Many miss their families, so they are always excited internet access. They also need ways of passing the long hours.

4. Guided Paragraph Writing

Write a short paragraph (80–120 words) about how a sailor uses media and entertainment during their free time. You must include:

At least 3 different Gerunds (e.g., playing, reading)
At least 3 different Infinitives (e.g., to relax, to call)
Write between 80 and 120 words.

EXAMPLE SENTENCE STRUCTURE:

"I enjoy playing cards with my friends, but I also need to study new navigation charts."
